The location for this city gallery is a villa near to Schloss Strünkede that has been used for exhibitions by the city of Herne since 1978. It houses several art stocks from the Emschertal Museum, which display a spectrum of artistic trends from the 20th century. The collection also covers naturalism as well as expressionist and object-related works. The main focus is on hand drawings as well as work on paper with a collection of 4500 individual sheets of national significance. The city gallery also possesses works by internationally and nationally renowned artists. Works by Pablo Picasso and Marc Chargall are housed here. Painters such as Bruno Foltynowicz, Lothar Gambke and Jupp Gesing represent the “Herne Artist” group, founded in 1949. While Gustav Deppe, Emil Schumacher and Thomas Grochowiak stand for the "junger westen" (the young west) circle that was formed in Recklinghausen in 1948. Work by the “B 1” artist group is of importance for the regional art scene – their members are heavily influenced by the industrial culture of the Ruhr area. Exhibitions of contemporary artwork regularly take place in the city gallery.
