The Museum Ostwall (MO) reopened in Dortmund U in October 2010, the old location was vacated in June 2009.
Since 2005, MO has adhered to the central idea of the art museum as a power station. This is drawing on a progressive idea of Alexander Dorners and, in this sense, the MO does not see itself as a cultural location where pieces of art are displayed as time-transcending testimonials, but as a location where artistic and aesthetic, historical, political and social, architectural and urban aspects of today and tomorrow can be explored through the collection’s artwork as well as exhibitions, courses, and events. The MO is a warehouse for the past and, at the same time, a venue for current artistic and social productivity. The collection’s new presentation has been titled "The museum as a power station". It starts with Fluxus/Happening and leads back in time to expressionist works. On the next level, the tour starts again with Fluxus and then takes one through rooms with works by Wolf Vostell, Joseph Beuys, Dieter Roth, Martin Kippenberger, Anna and Bernhard Blume to installations by Jason Rhoades and Mark Dion as well as to photographs and videos by Adrian Paci and Tobias Zielony. Another focal point for the exhibition is the Hans Breder Archive with videos and scripts from intermedia and time-bound art forms from the 1960s to the present day. The archive is jointly run by the MO and the Technical University Dortmund. The "Archive of the Future" and the "MO Loudspeaker" are new additions to the collection presentation. Here, visitors to the museum can get involved in the development and evolution of the Archive of the Future.
The collection presentation is complemented by posters, photographs, film excerpts and interviews with artists. Digital media stations and audio guides offer information on artists as well as the background to the creation of artworks from the early 20th century to the present day.
