Opened in the summer of 2009, this museum is dedicated to the lifework of the Hagen artist Emil Schumacher (1912-1999) – one of Germany’s most important abstract expressionists. The collection is based on a gift from the artist’s son, Ulrich Schumacher. It includes 88 oil paintings dating from 1936 to 1999, 200 gouaches, graphic designs, 25 ceramic pieces, 50 pictures on porcelain and 10 slate paintings. In addition, 100 works owned by the city of Hagen are also housed in the collection.

The museum building was designed by the Mannheim architects Lindemann Architekten. It is a rectangular exposed-concrete building with a glass coat covering the whole of it. The night view of the building offers a stark contrast to the day view thanks to a colourful light installation. During the day, sunlight accentuates the façade. At night, the building is lit up from within. The massive structure is covered with light in such a way that the vertical concrete areas are visibly lit up. The most striking architectural element is the elongated staircase visible from the museum square and which provides access to the building. The museum has 1100 square metres of exhibition space over three floors. The exhibition layout is dedicated to Schumacher’s development as an artist and provides insight into his techniques and all the materials he used.
The Emil Schumacher Museum views itself as a centre for the study of abstract expressionism. It displays the work of Emil Schumacher in its exhibition program in relation to parallel developments in international art as well as in comparison to his predecessors and contemporaries. In addition, the museum regularly shows contemporary artists whose work is similar to Schumacher’s in its form or content.
